The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi , on Wednesday, offset a bill of N200, 000 , being payment for the treatment of an accident victim, Durojaye Abiodun, at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) , Abeokuta
Mr Clement Oladele, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, who gave the money to the patient at the hospital on behalf of the Corps Marshall, noted that the FRSC boss got to know about the young man’s predicament through the Social Media.
Oladele added that Abiodun, 25, was walking along Ifo – Abeokuta road when he was knocked down by a reckless driver in December and fractured his leg.
“He was coming around Aro Psychiatric hospital , a reckless driver that wanted to dodge a pothole knocked him down , the driver stopped, picked him and brought him to Federal Medical Center.
“We were still doing our Easter patrol when the corp marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi got to know about the victim through the social media that he needed assistance from Nigerians to offset his medical bills
.
“He now said in the spirit of Easter, we should investigate and if it is true, we see what we can do and we discovered that his bill was almost close to N300, 000, he said I should talk to FMC if they can give a discount.
“They initially gave us 30 per cent discount which was gracious enough but they eventually reduced the money to N200, 000 .
“He said it is in the spirit of Easter, to show brotherly love just the way Christ died and rose for mankind and that the little he can do was to pay the money.
“Even the hospital was still gracious enough because the head of the team that operated on his fractured leg said he didn’t have money, so, they contributed money among the doctors to pay for the operation,” he said.
Oladele stated that the FRSC was no longer looking at the cause of crashes but the cost, saying that accidents had caused a lot of home agony and pain.
He appealed to motorists to drive carefully and also consider the states of some roads while driving so as not to cause injuries or death of another person.
In his response, Prof. Adewale Musa -Olomu , Medical Director, Federal Medical Center, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, commended the corps marshal for his kind gesture, saying that he had displayed good leadership quality.
He urged Non- Governmental Organisations(NGOs), philanthropists and well meaning Nigerians to always visit hospitals and render assistance to poor patients.
The victim, Abiodun, thanked the FRSC for their support, saying that he was the happiest man on earth.
“My medical treatment was completed March 15 , but we were unable to pay for my medical bills.
“I was going on the road on that fateful day and the vehicle hit me. I have been in the hospital since December and am so happy that a good Nigerian has settled my medical bills, ” he said.
