FG bans SS1, SS2 students in unity schools from writing WASSCE, NECO

The federal government has banned SS 1 and SS 2 students in unity schools across the country from participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO).

 

Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, federal ministry of education’s director of senior secondary education, broke the news in a circular addressed to unity schools on Friday.

According to the circular, the students are also prohibited from taking the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).

The ministry said the directive became imperative considering the fact that such students find it difficult to “settle down on serious studies” after realising they already have results before getting to SS3.

 

It added that any SS1 and SS2 students found to have taken the listed exams would be expelled from the school.

“The ministry’s attention has been drawn to the flagrant disregard to its directive on (the) writing of external examinations such as NABTEB (NTC and NBC), WASSCE, NECO (SSCE) by SS1 and SS2 students,” it read.

“Students who are involved in the practice find it difficult to settle down on serious studies. They become unruly and distract other students from achieving their goals.

 

“Any student caught to have written any of the above examinations in SS1 or SS2 classes will be expelled from the college. All students must write these examinations after they have been duly registered for the examination by the college.

“All students of Federal Unity College should adhere strictly to the content of this circular. And Principals are advised to bring the content of this circular to the knowledge of all parents of the college.”

Ben Bem Goong, the ministry’s director of press and public relations, also confirmed the development.

“Yes, it’s true. The reason is because when some of these SS1 and SS2 students make their results, they become a major nuisance to the entire school,” he said.

 

“You know how students can behave when they know that whatever happens, they already have their result.”
