Tanker Explosion leaves many dead, injures others in Ogun

No fewer than four person were reportedly burnt to death while two others were injured on Sunday morning following a tanker explosion at railway crossing, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.


Salient Times reports that the outbreak was as result of an explosion from a  Premium Motor Spirits (PMS) popularly called petrol, laden truck  that overturned after bumping into the road median in Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, and spilling the contents all over the road.


Shortly after it fell,  balls of fire and thick smoke erupted, sending people scampering for safety but four persons were feared dead and two others suffered some degrees of burns.

Apart from the death, the market was also affected as many shops and shanties were razed by the fire.


Superintendent Route Commander Florence Okpe of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) Public Education unit Office for Sector Commander FRSC, Ogun Sector Command, Ahmed Umar, confirmed the occurrence of the overturned fuel tanker on Sunday morning.


Okpe advised members of the public and residents to vacate the vicinity, while operatives of the FRSC, TRACE, POLICE, FIRE SERVICE and other 1st responders resolve the emergency.


She stated : "A tanker laden with fuel which overturned while making its way inbound Rounder from Oju-Irin, Lafenwa Abeokuta Ogun State, is now engulfed in fire,  due to the uncooperative attitude of people around the axis through scooping of fuel and other unwholesome act which sparked off the fire.


"The general public are advised to vacate the vicinity, while FRSC, TRACE, POLICE, FIRE SERVICE and other 1st responders resolve the latest emergency."
