The Chief Executive Officer of the Gender Development Initiative,(GenDi) a non governmental organisation with thematic area bothering on eradication of Violence Against Women and Girls Prof. Olubunmi Ashimolowo has for the umpteenth time cried against contestant harassment of Women by Men.
She made the project's stance Known at the Community Village Square meetings which were held at Iwelepe (Sagamu LGA) and Konifewo ( Ado Odo Otta LGA) Communities of Ogun State, in collaboration with Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (“WARDC”).
Professor Ashimolowo who was represented at the meetings by a member of GenDi's Board of Trustees - Mrs Kemi Ademuyiwa expressed outrage over the increasing cases of Women and Child abuse,warning that the Initiative would continue in its efforts aimed at nipping the development in the bud.
"We have made very meaningful impact in our fight against gender violence. " Ashimolowo said, appealing to the male gender not to always resort to beating women, whenever there was scuffle between them", the Professor who lectures at the Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta FUNAAB ,said
She further explained that the meetings were to present the Community Response Team of the Initiative ,(CRT) to stakeholders in the community and achieve a synergy that would make the activities of the project,a worth while one.
"Our efforts at nipping gender violence in Nigeria in the bud are beginning to yield fruitful results.We have organised seminars on gender Violence and also engaged in legal battles with people involved in gender offences" the GenDi boss added.
She expressed appreciation to those who attended the meeting,assuring them of more positive actions by the project,stressing "on our side, we would not relent until gender violence is completely eradicated in our society".
Responding at the Konifewo Village Square meeting, the Baale (Head) of the community, expressed satisfaction over the activities of the project , particularly its staff who he said were thorough, in their handling of gender violence,related cases.
"Gender abuse can be reduced in our society, our society will be prosperous as people will carry out their activities without fear or stress" he posited and appealed to stakeholders to work "hand in hand" with the project's staff.
At the Iwelepe meeting, the Head of the community, who spoke on 'Gender Based Violence" said,any man that beats a woman has beaten his mother and prayed for the success of the project.
