The police in Bayelsa State have arrested a stepmother, Peremboere Botu, over the chaining of a boy accused of wizardry. Operatives from the Ekeki Division of the Bayelsa State Police Command said the nine-year-old Godday Simon Afrebo was tied to a pole, accused of using voodoo against his family and causing his father’s misfortune.
The incident, which occurred on Agboli Street in Okutukutu area of Yenagoa Local Government Area, attracted police operatives who stepped in to rescue the boy.
It was gathered that the advocacy groups, Starrz Safety Initiative led by its Executive Director, Mary Bekeowei Accrah, and FOMWAN led by Hajia Maryam Abeki drew the attention of the Bayelsa State Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT) led by its chairman, Barrister Dise Ogbise, over the boy’s suffering from the 38-year-old stepmother.
It was gathered that the boy’s biological father, identified as Simon Afrebo, said to be a prophet and an indigene of Ogbia, has absconded.
The State Chairman of the Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT), Dise Ogbise described the incident as pathetic and another embarrassing case of domestic violence against children. Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said a discreet investigation is ongoing.
