The Ogun State command of Nigeria Custom Service, said it has impounded a lorry load of smuggled rice at Rounda area of Abeokuta
In a release signed by the CAC spokesperson, Abdulahi Maiwada, he said the command Roving Patrol Team intercepted the smuggled rice in spite of its concealment by the smugglers.
The statement reads "in continuation with the fight against smuggling of rice and other prohibited items by Officers and Men of Ogun Command under the leadership of Comptroller Agbara Ojobo Michael (CAC Ogun Command), the Command’s Roving ‘B’ Anti-smuggling Patrol Team made another discovery of a new antics explored by dear devil smugglers to beat ‘the eagle eye’ of proactive Officers and Men of the Command".
Maiwada added, "The items were carefully concealed in a Volvo truck with registration number: BEN–236 ZW Edo state between Rounda to Lafenwa area of Abeokuta, Ogun state".
"Further examination revealed one hundred and ninety (190) bags of foreign parboiled rice carefully packaged in a deceptive manner in order to perpetuate the illicit act of hampering the economic progress of our dear nation".
"It is pertinent to recall that on 07th of May, 2019 the same unit intercepted a tipper truck (Volvo made) along Ilaro-Papalanto axis of Ogun state with chasis number: YBIG5A3A9SB140227 misconstrued to be containing sand (fine aggregate)".
"Upon further examination, two hundred (200) bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each) were also uncovered".
"To this end, the CAC appealed to the general public to always embrace legitimate means of livelihood and to avoid smuggling in all its ramifications".
"The eagle eye is all around Ogun state to uncover and suppress to the barest minimum in the interest of economic prosperity and national development".
