As Nigerians commemorated the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, prominent public affairs advocate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Chief Toyin Amuzu, popularly known as TA, combined words with action by distributing free fuel support to 600 commercial transport operators while calling on the Federal Government to place greater emphasis on security and citizens’ welfare.
The two-day intervention programme, held on Wednesday and Friday in Abeokuta, benefited 200 commercial taxi drivers with fuel worth ₦10,000 each and 400 commercial motorcycle riders with fuel worth ₦5,000 each. The initiative was aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel costs and providing relief to transport operators grappling with the nation's economic challenges.
Speaking during the exercise, Amuzu said the gesture was his way of identifying with the people during difficult times and honouring the sacrifices of late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes who fought for the democracy Nigerians enjoy today.
According to him, June 12 should be more than a day of remembrance; it should serve as a period for leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people.
"June 12 should not only be a day of remembrance but also a period for leaders to demonstrate commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people. This is my own little effort, which I have continued to make over time, even without holding any political position," he said.
Amuzu noted that democracy is meaningful only when it translates into improved living conditions for ordinary citizens.
"As we celebrate June 12, we must remember the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola and other democracy martyrs who laid down their lives for the democracy we enjoy today. The essence of democracy is the welfare of the people. It is about improving lives and giving hope to the ordinary citizen."
He lamented the worsening economic conditions across the country, pointing out that many families, small business owners, and transport operators are struggling under the weight of rising living costs and declining economic opportunities.
"I won't allow my people to die in penury. No one can honestly say things are easy. Families are finding it difficult to put food on the table, transport operators are battling high fuel costs, and small businesses are struggling to stay afloat. While we continue to demand better governance, we must also support one another and provide relief where possible."
The PDP chieftain described the fuel distribution programme as a modest social support initiative designed to help beneficiaries increase their earnings and sustain their businesses.
"This support may appear small, but it can make a significant difference. When a driver or rider uses this fuel, it means more trips, more customers, and more income. Ultimately, it translates into improved welfare for their families."
Amuzu disclosed that the exercise represents the 16th intervention programme he has personally sponsored over the years to cushion the effects of economic hardship and improve the living conditions of residents of Abeokuta South and beyond.
Beyond the fuel support initiative, Amuzu used the occasion of Democracy Day to congratulate Nigerians and reflect on the nation's democratic journey. In a statement made available to journalists, he described the annual celebration as a reminder of Nigeria's resilience and collective aspirations for a better future.
He noted that despite numerous challenges, Nigerians have continued to demonstrate remarkable courage, patience, and commitment to democratic ideals.
According to him, Democracy Day offers leaders at all levels an opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities and renew their commitment to good governance, accountability, and effective service delivery.
"Today, we celebrate not only our democratic achievements but also the sacrifices of countless patriots who fought for the freedoms and rights we enjoy as a nation. Democracy thrives when the welfare and security of the people remain the primary focus of government."
Expressing concern over the prevailing security challenges across different parts of the country, Amuzu stressed that insecurity remains a major obstacle to national development, economic growth, and social stability.
He called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward addressing insecurity through improved intelligence gathering, enhanced support for security agencies, and proactive measures capable of guaranteeing the safety of lives and property.
The public affairs advocate also urged government at all levels to implement policies and programmes that directly improve the living conditions of Nigerians, particularly in the areas of employment generation, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
"The welfare of citizens must remain at the centre of governance. Nigerians deserve access to quality education, affordable healthcare, gainful employment opportunities, and an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. These are essential ingredients for a prosperous and stable nation."
While acknowledging the efforts being made to tackle some national challenges, Amuzu appealed to political leaders, public office holders, and other stakeholders to work together in the interest of national unity and development. He also urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, patriotic, and supportive of initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Beneficiaries of the fuel support programme expressed appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely and thoughtful given the current economic realities. Several taxi drivers and motorcycle riders said the intervention would help reduce operational costs and improve their daily earnings.
Community leaders and residents who witnessed the programme commended Amuzu for consistently supporting grassroots development through practical interventions. They noted that his humanitarian efforts, including the drilling of over 20 boreholes in various communities, food assistance programmes, educational support, healthcare interventions, youth empowerment schemes, and other social welfare projects, have positively impacted many lives across Abeokuta South.
As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day anniversary, beneficiaries including Musbau Adisa, Sunday Adejare, and Wale Akingbade described Amuzu's gesture as a reflection of the true spirit of June 12—sacrifice, service to humanity, and a commitment to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach ordinary citizens.
Amuzu concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome its challenges and emerge stronger, provided leaders remain committed to addressing the needs and aspirations of the people through responsible leadership, unity, and collective action.
