The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, South-West Zone, has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a student identified as Ayeni Ademiju in Osun State.
The call was made by the NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, following reports that Ademiju was allegedly stabbed in Osogbo last Saturday.
TVP gathered that the deceased was stabbed at the venue of the NANS convention held in Osogbo, an incident which later resulted in his death.
Ademiju was initially identified in reports as a student of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
However, Adeyemo said facts available to his office indicated that the incident that led to Ademiju’s death did not occur within the premises where the convention was held.
He said the convention had been successfully concluded before participants and officials began receiving information about Ademiju’s condition and subsequent death.
Adeyemo said, “The convention was successfully concluded before information concerning the deceased’s condition and subsequent death began reaching participants and officials who had already left or were leaving the venue.”
He urged the Osun State Police Command to investigate all relevant circumstances surrounding the incident and establish what led to the student’s death.
Adeyemo added, “We are urging the Osun State Police Command to examine every credible angle, including the deceased’s movements, persons who were with him before his death, any earlier disputes and any relevant affiliations necessary to establish the truth.”
Meanwhile, the management of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, clarified that Ademiju was not a registered student of the institution at the time of his death.
In a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Abiodun Oloyede, the management said Ademiju was admitted into its part-time programme in 2023 but did not complete his registration.
The statement said, “There was no evidence of registration, which could have enabled him to write his examinations to complete his National Diploma programme in the school. He left the Polytechnic about three years ago.”
The institution said it was concerned by reports linking Ademiju to the Polytechnic, adding, “He should not be described as our student.”
The Osun State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, had earlier confirmed the incident.
DSP Ojelabi said the disagreement involving Ayeni and some individuals had initially been resolved before the convention participants dispersed.
He added that Ayeni was subsequently rushed to a hospital in Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead.
He, however, could not confirm whether any suspect had been arrested in connection with the student’s death.
