Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu; and the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Saliu Mustapha, have mourned the four members of a family who died following the collapse of a three-storey building in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The building collapsed on Tuesday at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, in the Popo Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, trapping eight members of the same family in the rubble.
Four members of the family were rescued alive, while four others died in the incident, with emergency responders working for hours at the scene to search through the debris and rescue those trapped.
Reacting to the incident in a Facebook post late Tuesday, AbdulRazaq said he was saddened by the tragedy and had visited the injured victims to assess their condition.
“I am saddened by the tragic collapse of a 3-storey building in Popo Giwa area of Ilorin, earlier today. My heart goes out to victims of the very sad incident. I have paid a get-well-visit to those injured during the building collapse,” the governor wrote.
AbdulRazaq said his administration was providing medical care and other necessary support to the survivors to ensure that they stabilised and recovered from their injuries.
“I wished them safe and quick recovery. Our government is giving them the necessary medical care and support to ensure they are stable and recover promptly,” he said.

The governor disclosed that a delegation of the state government, led by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, had earlier visited the scene to assess the situation and sympathise with members of the affected community.
AbdulRazaq commended the first responders and community volunteers involved in the rescue operation, describing their efforts as a reflection of the solidarity of the people during moments of grief.
“I commend all our first responders from the State Emergency Management Agency to the State Fire Service, the Ilorin West Local Government authorities, and all our community volunteers for the coordinated rescue efforts,” the governor said.
“It is a reflection of our values as a people who solidarise with one another during moments of need and grief,” he added.
The governor also linked the tragedy to the need for greater attention to construction safety and compliance with established standards.
“I ask Almighty Allaah to comfort families who are bereaved from the incident. Again, this is another pointer to the fact that we must take safety protocols seriously in construction,” AbdulRazaq said.
He said the state government remained committed to enforcing construction standards and urged residents to cooperate with the authorities on safety matters.
“Our administration is irrevocably committed to upholding standards always to keep our people safe. We appeal for your cooperation and support as citizens,” he said.
In a separate reaction, Mustapha expressed grief over the deaths and extended his condolences to the families of the victims and residents of the affected community.
In a statement issued by his Media Assistant, Nasif Sholagberu, the senator described the incident as a tragedy and commiserated with those who lost loved ones.
The lawmaker also commended the emergency responders who participated in the rescue operation.
Mustapha called for stricter compliance with building regulations, particularly by property owners and developers, warning against practices that could put occupants and members of the public at risk.
The senator further urged residents to take responsibility for reporting signs of structural weakness before they develop into life-threatening emergencies.
He prayed for the speedy recovery of the survivors and expressed solidarity with the families of those killed in the collapse.
Also reacting to the incident, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and APC governorship candidate, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, mourned the victims and commiserated with their families.
The Speaker’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulkadir Yusuf.
Danladi-Salihu described the incident as unfortunate and prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors who sustained varying degrees of injuries in the collapse.
The APC governorship candidate also commended the state government and the combined team of rescuers for their swift response to the incident.
